Hi! My name is Kat Daniels (they/them) and I am currently the Sound Intern at Florida Repertory Theatre in Fort Myers, FL. I am a recent graduate of Converse University where I earned a BA in German Studies and Business Adminstration with a minor in Theatre. Outside of my work in entertainment, I like reading, photography, listening to music, video games, and collecting various Lego sets. I can often be found after a long day of work curled up in a chair with a good story, whether it's printed or filmed.
In entertainment, out of all forms of technical work, I adore sound mixing and engineering the most. Seeing how music is what led me to technical work, it is not the most surprising conclusion to come to. I believe theatre and other live entertainment events are a key part of humanity. Humans have come together to tell stories, to tell people that they are not alone, and to learn more about each other as a collective for as long as we have existed. Being able to be a part of a group to help others tell stories through theatre, or music, or even stand-up comedy, is a central interest in my life. Productions often explore topics and ideas that are hard for many to think and digest and that often need the most discussion. Being able to influence a discussion, being able to influence someone, even indirectly–that is what I love about theatre and live entertainment. I was heavily impacted by some of my favorite self-producing musicians, who inspired me to start the journey I am on today.
Sound, to me, is a visceral way to perceive and experience the world around you. I like to think of sound (and music) as one of the most powerful tools of communication and connection, regardless of someone's native language. While we may not all speak the same tongue, sound is that connection between us. If I can help even just one person experience sound in a way that changes their life, however minutely, I would be satisfied with my work for the day. Then I would get up the next morning and do it all over again, just in case I can change someone else’s life like mine was changed with sound.
